In the Garden

May 15, 2011

Today was the first day without rain in almost 3 weeks. It’s been a loooong 3 weeks.! We took full advantage of the ‘cloud’ at our house, mowing the lawns, weeding the gardens, spreading some fresh mulch and starting the never ending task of pulling up the dandelions. Last summer I was VERY pregnant and found this to be difficult until my father-in-law brought me a Fiskars Deluxe Telescopic Stand-up Weeder.  It is the easiest stand-up weeder I have ever used, a little bit of an investment but totally worth it! If you have dandelions and live in an area with a pesticide-ban (or are like me and just plain don’t like using chemicals) than try this out, it saves your back and makes your lawn look pretty.

Now that our ‘grounds’ are starting to shape up it’s time to think about the vegetable garden. Usually by this time we’ve put the fence up, weeded and turned the soil and have the root vegetables planted. So far, we have the fence up… and that’s it!! Needless to say, next weekend is going to be busy!! I spent last night deciding what new things we will grow and where everything will be planted. Now that I have a plan I’m motivated to get to work (too bad the rain is back and it will have to wait for another day).

Next on my list are annual flower pots, planters and windowboxes. These are my favorite because  I can put in them whatever I want, they are up high enough that I don’t have to worry about the deer and other hungry herbivores!! I always plant some geraniums and pansies and am excited to go to the garden center and pick out something new.

I hope all you other gardeners are getting ready for the season like I am… but that you are not as far behind. I have to keep reminding myself that it will all get done, I just need a little co-operation from Mother Nature!
